If you see someone needs a mentor, be the mentor. When he speaks, which is a lot, people listen because he’s usually right and his wisdom comes out.ģ. But he’s a keen observer, and his years of observations made him the wisest of the Hat Creek outfit of cowboys. Augustus McCrae doesn’t dirty his hands with the work of driving cattle very often. It’s time to pass the torch, and he does.Ģ. The cowboys still look to him and expect him to give orders, but he has nothing to give them.
But when the drive is over and the work is done, Call’s vision dries up. With 3,000 head of cattle, he drags his collection of cowboys through mesquite thickets and menacing creeks, around outlaws and past one fearsome grizzly bear. Call got it in his mind that Montana was the place to be. Here they are, drawn from some of the lead characters.
While reading, I picked up a few gems about work and workers that are just as relevant and valuable today as they were on a cattle drive from South Texas to Montana. Last week I finished Lonesome Dove: A Novel, Larry McMurtry’s 1985 Pulitzer-winning masterpiece about life on the Western frontier (which is a gross oversimplification of the story, to say the least).
